Sleep Apnea Symptoms

#Sleep apnea is one of the most under-diagnosed conditions in the country because its symptoms are confused with consequences of other life events, such as hangovers, overwork, or stress. However, sleep apnea can be the cause of many serious health effects, and should be treated as a separate condition. If you experience any combination of the following, you may suffer from sleep apnea:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Morning headaches
  • Cognitive difficulties including:
    • Short-term memory problems
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Increased difficulty solving problems/tasks that used to be easy
  • Weight gain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Psychological difficulties such as:
    • Depression
    • Irritability
    • Anxiety
    • Mood swings
    • Impotence or decreased sex drive
    • Lack of motivation
    • Narcoleptic attacks
  • Poor job performance

Sleep apnea is defined as the cessation of breathing during sleep for at least 10 seconds, and at least 5 times in an hour.
But there is help out there!

If you suspect you may have sleep apnea, the next step may be to Create a Sleep Diary or have your sleep partner or a close friend observe your sleeping behavior. In doing so, they should look for:

  • Heavy snoring
  • Choking/gasping sounds
  • Restfulness/ tossing during sleep
  • Frequent waking

If you feel strongly that you may be suffering from sleep apnea, you may skip the step of being observed, and receive a diagnosis from Dr. Shapira. If you are a sleep apnea sufferer, the sooner you are diagnosed, the better off you will be, since many of the effects of sleep apnea are cumulative.
