Sleep Apnea Treatment

#Once you have received your sleep apnea diagnosis, you will also be evaluated to determine which treatment option will work best for you. Most people with sleep apnea suffer from what is known as obstructive sleep apnea, in which the interruption of breath is caused by blockage of the airway. For these people, there are many treatment options available, and we will recommend treatments beginning with the least disruptive and moving on to the most dramatic interventions available. Usually, the order in which sleep apnea treatment options are considered is:

  • Behavioral therapy including diet and exercise to lose weight, sleeping in a different position with or without the use of pillows, or avoidance of alcohol and sedatives
  • Medication designed to curb the effects of sleep apnea, generally used in conjunction with other treatments
  • Oral appliance therapy using custom-designed mouthpieces that hold your airways open
  • CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) in which a machine pumps air into your throat to keep the airways open
  • Surgery to correct structurally restricted airways

Sleep apnea is defined as the cessation of breathing during sleep for at least 10 seconds, and at least 5 times in an hour.
But there is help out there!

After reading through the descriptions of treatment options, you will have a better idea of what you might expect from treatment, although the only way to know which treatments are right for you is to have a comprehensive sleep apnea diagnosis evaluated by Dr. Shapira.
